Windsurfing in Tarifa on Andalucia Holiday Rentals
As the story goes a Californian man attached a sail to his surfboard sometime in 1967 to keep moving when there were not any waves, hence the sport of windsurfing was born. The sport became so popular that we now have national and international championships throughout the world. Andalucia holidays is no exception as the climate conditions here are conducive to this sport especially in Tarifa where they hold the Ballantine’s Championship and the Toro Andaluz race that is held during Easter week. This is a good time to book your Andalucia holiday rentalsindsurfing season really gets going during this time of year.
Tarifa is the best site for windsurfing as the winds are compressed through the Strait of Gibraltar making this area often too perilous for the beginners. Only the professional or serious amateur should attempt to windsurf in this area when the winds are at their strongest. There are now four surf schools in Tarifa that teach all levels of surfing from the beginner to the expert. If you didn’t bring your board with you then do not worry; there are a number of rental centres in the town where you can rent what you need. The more modern boards use the same carbon technology as spaceships with smaller sails; they will enable some people to windsurf in forty knot winds while doing what looks like impossible jumps. The only down side to these modern boards is they tend to sink when there is insufficient winds to keep them riding the tide.
Some people say that windsurfing is the most fun you can have with your clothes – or, in this case, swimming suit – on. A day out on Tarifa’s beach is one filled with a competitive atmosphere due to the races and speed trials that are going on up and down the beach; all this adds up to an exhilarating day out. Some people say that women are better at this sport than men due to their balance but in reality all it takes is an able-bodied person, not necessary an athletic body although you do need a certain amount of strength to turn the board back over after the inevitable fall.
There are a number of lessons you will soon learn when you start to windsurf. One of the most important things to learn how to do is turn your board around. Let’s face it: you don’t want to be seen sailing off into the sunset because you can’t turn around and head home. The next thing to remember is don’t go windsurfing just as the sun is setting or if the wind is to strong don’t go out unless you have some watching you from shore or preferably a boat. The most important one to remember is don’t leave the shoreline without a life-jacket and if the wind is to strong there will always be other days to go. When booking your Andalucia holiday rentals, and if you are a beginner, you might consider taking a place on a less windy coast such as Roquetas del Mar.
