We are active seniors planning a cruise thru the Panama Canal. Please, any info you can give us would be great. We live in southern California. Would like to hear postive and negative comments that would help us plan our vacation.

Well you have several options for a Panama Canal cruise. You can cruise TO the Canal for an experience of going through the locks. Or, you can cruise THROUGH the whole canal from one end to the other and end your Cruise In either Florida or go the opposite direction and end it in California. OR, a few cruises that are longer do a transit both way, or you can book two separate cruises that go both ways making it a round trip. You can begin your cruise on the west coast, or on the east coast.
Panama Canal cruise are in actuality cruise with several ports stops and with the Panama Canal being one of them. So, for example, if you cruise there from California you will likely have ports stops in Mexico, like Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and some others on the way and then maybe a stop in the Caribbean like Jamaica and/or Grand Cayman on your way to Florida, depending on the cruise itinerary and line. So plan on at least 14 days for the cruise and then a day or so to travel back to California.
We enjoyed very much our cruise there and although we did not transit the entire canal by ship, we did take a tour from the ship that was a train ride across Panama to the West Coast locks and a tour there also. So one of the things you may want to look at when selecting a cruise is what tours are available in Panama.
We did our cruise to Panama on Princess and I do recommend them and also Celebrity, Royal Caribbean and Holland America for great first class Cruise Line. Holland is the line that will have the most senior citizens, passengers age about 60 to 70 and above, and they do have great on-board activities for seniors, like lectures and seminars. But you will not go wrong with any of the lines I have mentioned.
Panama and the Caribbean can be hot and humid and Panama gets a lot of rain. I think a springtime cruise would be best and you for sure want to avoid the Caribbean during the hurricane season (June through Nov). Book early to get the best price and also look for specials, all of the cruise lines will have them.
